The National Writers Series

The National Writers Series (legal name Writers Series of Traverse City) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging world-renowned authors in meaningful conversations in the Traverse City area. Our goal is to create a deeper understanding of issues and ways of life that exist within and outside of our rural boundaries. We are also “raising writers” with programs that help students express themselves, explore the world through reading, develop their imaginations, and think critically.

About The National Writers Series

The National Writers Series (legal name Writers Series of Traverse City) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging world-renowned authors in meaningful conversations in the Traverse City area. Our goal is to create a deeper understanding of issues and ways of life that exist within and outside of our rural boundaries. We are also “raising writers” with programs that help students express themselves, explore the world through reading, develop their imaginations, and think critically.

Since 2010, the National Writers Series has hosted nearly 200 authors––including Margaret Atwood, David Sedaris, Jodie Picoult, Jason Reynolds, and Anthony Doerr––and drawn more than 75,000 people to events, mostly to the City Opera House. The events have also sold some 21,000 books through local bookstores.

The other half of NWS’s mission is to support young readers and writers in all kinds of ways. We hope that someday one of our young storytellers will return to the Opera House to talk about their newest bestselling book and how their love of writing began right here in Traverse City.

The classes and workshops draw students from a five-county area—students who, in many cases, have no creative writing class in their home district. Aspiring writers in grades 7-12 can attend monthly Writing Workshops and special Author Masterclasses from visiting NWS authors. NWS also offers a semester-long Creative Writing Studio. Students also publish their work in the annual NWS Literary Journal and recite their work at author events.

Our other Raising Writers program include four college scholarships, a Battle of the Books trivia competition for fourth and fifth graders, elementary poetry workshops, and writing classes put on in tandem with Northwestern Michigan College.
