About Michigan Interfaith Power & Light

Founded in 2002, Michigan IPL works statewide to gather and focus the immense grassroots power within Michigan’s faith communities to help them become leaders in the effort to address the climate crisis and environmental degradation. Based in Detroit since 2019, we are part of the 40-state national Interfaith Power & Light network and are connected with over 300 member congregations representing over 30 denominations and traditions statewide. We believe that our climate crisis and environmental injustice are also spiritual and moral crises. To repair our climate and create a world where all beings can thrive, transformation will be required at all levels, from 1) our spirits to 2) our everyday lived realities to our 3) social and political systems. (This “3-legged stool” is a guiding image for our work.) We convene biennial-ish conferences and webinars, participate in coalitions and campaigns around utility accountability and energy-related legislation, promote non-partisan voter engagement, and support faith-based organizations in taking action towards sustainability and climate justice. We have brought energy efficient upgrades and expertise to over 1,300 houses of worship in MI since 2015 and, thanks in part to our work, Michigan has more EPA ENERGY STAR-certified congregations than any other state. We are in the process of expanding our expertise to meet this moment of the climate crisis, when we must organize and build the capacity of our constituents to transform the power structures that are leading our civilization to its end in pursuit of profit. Michigan IPL is also the fiscal sponsor of Hope for Creation and the Michigan Poor People’s Campaign.
