About Charlevoix County Community Foundation

The Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) is a charitable organization dedicated to improving and enriching life in its geographic region by building philanthropic capital, making grants to support a variety of worthy organizations and programs, and working in partnership with community groups and organizations to address local issues. Started in 1992 by a group of civic leaders, C3F has experienced vibrant growth.  Net assets now exceed $50 million; average annual grantmaking is more than $2.5 million, and component funds number 270.

C3F has an annual operating budget of $700,000, with estimated revenues of an equal amount.  Administrative fees represent approximately 95% of income used for general fund operations.  A sizeable administrative endowment is available to meet unexpected shortfalls, or to help the Foundation during major growth spurts in its development.

A 15-member board of trustees, representing all geographic areas of the county, provides guidance and oversight.  Current committees of the board include the Executive Committee, composed of the four officers who also serve as the Personnel Committee and a fifth at-large representative; the Finance/Investment Committee, responsible for budget and investment decisions; and the Distribution Committee, which reviews and recommends grant distributions to the board.

Advisory committees from Beaver Island, Boyne City, Charlevoix and East Jordan assist in identifying community needs and make grant recommendations from geographic field-of-interest funds.  A separate Environmental and Land Use Advisory Committee evaluates and makes grant recommendations related to environmental projects.  A robust Youth Advisory Committee recommends grants from the Youth Fund.

The C3F is a member of the Council of Michigan Foundations.  The Foundation was one of the first to comply with the rigorous National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.  More information about C3F is available on our website, including the latest annual report, audited financial statements and IRS Form 990.
